David Wiese Reveals What Keeps Him Going at 39

Namibian all-rounder David Wiese, a star in the 2024 Abu Dhabi T10 tournament with the Deccan Gladiators, has opened up about what drives him to excel in cricket at the age of 39. In a press release from the tournament, Wiese shared how his passion for the sport and a desire to improve fuel his enduring career, even as others question his age.

โ€œFor me, itโ€™s just the motivation to get better every single day. I love cricket, I enjoy training, and I enjoy trying to improve,โ€ Wiese said. โ€œEvery single time somebody mentions my age, it motivates me a little bit more. Maybe I have a chip on my shoulder, but that just drives me to push harder.โ€

Wiese credited advancements in fitness science and technology as key factors that allow athletes to prolong their playing days.

โ€œIn the modern age, people are fitter and stronger. Technologies have advanced, and physios have developed new techniques that help players last longer,โ€ he explained. โ€œThe game is more professional now, and thereโ€™s a lot more at stake, which keeps players motivated to stay in the game longer.โ€

He also pointed out how modern cricket demands a balance of power and technique, both of which are supported by improved conditioning and resources.

Wiese praised the Abu Dhabi T10 as a platform for both young and experienced players to grow. He emphasized the importance of the tournament in providing emerging talents with opportunities to learn from seasoned professionals.

โ€œItโ€™s massive for younger players and especially local players to rub shoulders with some of the best guys in the world. They might not otherwise get that chance,โ€ he said.

Wiese also acknowledged the value of interacting with younger players, noting that their fresh perspectives can offer insights even to veterans.

โ€œThe youngsters often have different theories and techniques. They view the game differently, which can provide valuable insights even for seasoned players like myself.โ€
