Uncapped all-rounder Beau Webster has been added to Australia’s squad for the second Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy against India, set to begin on December 6 at the Adelaide Oval. The 30-year-old has been called in as cover for Mitchell Marsh, who featured in the first Test but is managing limited bowling workloads due to earlier injury concerns.
Webster’s selection follows a standout performance in red-ball cricket, particularly during the unofficial Test series against India A. He was Australia A’s second-highest run-scorer, tallying 145 runs at an average of 72.50, with a half-century to his name. His bowling also impressed, claiming seven wickets at an average of under 20.
Reacting to his selection, Webster expressed his enthusiasm. “To get a few runs and wickets (for Australia A) was pleasing against a strong Indian side. Playing ‘A’ cricket is just one step below Test level, so it helps prepare you well,” he said.
Webster is expected to provide cover for the middle-order during the Adelaide Test and the following match at the Gabba. Known for his versatility, Webster has played 93 first-class matches, amassing 5,297 runs at an average of 37.83, including 12 centuries. As a bowler, his unique combination of off-spin and pace has earned him 148 wickets at an average of 37.39. His recent form has been particularly noteworthy, with 1,121 runs in 15 matches this year at an average of 53.38, including three centuries and five fifties.
Interestingly, during the COVID-19 lockdown, Webster honed his fast-bowling skills to complement his off-spin, a move that adds depth to his all-round abilities and could be crucial for Australia.
Australia will hope Webster’s inclusion bolsters their lineup after suffering a crushing 295-run defeat in the first Test in Perth. Mitchell Marsh, who bowled 17 overs in that game—the most he has bowled in a Test since 2019—is under continued fitness assessment.
