England has unveiled their playing XI for the first Test against New Zealand at Hagley Oval, with 21-year-old Jacob Bethell set to make his Test debut. The left-handed batter will slot into the crucial number three position, highlighting Englandโs confidence in his talent and potential.
Bethell’s inclusion follows an impressive run in white-ball cricket, where he excelled against Australia and the West Indies. Despite not yet securing a first-class century, he showcased his skills during the 2022 ICC Menโs Under-19 Cricket World Cup, amassing 205 runs at an average of 34.16 to become Englandโs second-highest scorer in the tournament.
With Jamie Smith on paternity leave and backup keeper Jordan Cox ruled out due to injury, Ollie Pope will step in as wicketkeeper. England has emphasized flexibility in their lineup, with Popeโs dual responsibilities allowing them to maintain balance in the playing XI.
All-rounder Ben Stokes will captain the side in the opener of the three-match series. Englandโs bowling attack combines seasoned campaigners and emerging talent, featuring Chris Woakes, Gus Atkinson, and Brydon Carse as the pace trio, alongside debutant spinner Shoaib Bashir.
While England has already been eliminated from contention for the ICC World Test Championship Final at Lord’s, New Zealand remains firmly in the race. A 3-0 series win over England would secure their spot in the championship decider, adding extra stakes to this already high-profile clash.
The series begins on Friday in Christchurch, followed by matches in Wellington and Hamilton.
