Pakistan’s Test head coach, Jason Gillespie, is reportedly contemplating his position with the team following the Pakistan Cricket Board’s (PCB) decision not to renew the contract of assistant coach Tim Nielsen. The move, which has sparked dissatisfaction from Gillespie, comes amid growing tensions between the head coach and the PCB over several decisions in recent months.
Nielsen, appointed in August as the “high-performance red-ball coach,” saw his contract expire after Pakistan’s recent tour of Australia. Despite Nielsen’s expressed commitment to upcoming series against South Africa and the West Indies, the PCB informed him that his services would no longer be required. The decision was made without consulting Gillespie, leaving the head coach frustrated, particularly as he had praised Nielsen’s rapport with players.
The PCB’s rationale for Nielsen’s dismissal reportedly centers on his non-residency in Pakistan, a factor they have increasingly emphasized in their preference for local coaches. This trend aligns with similar cases, such as former coach Gary Kirsten, who resigned in October under similar circumstances. Nielsen’s availability for upcoming tours seemingly did little to sway the PCBโs stance.
This decision adds to a string of actions that Gillespie sees as undermining his role. In October, he was removed from the Test selection panel and reduced to a “matchday strategist,” a move he reportedly did not welcome. Last month, Gillespie was also asked to take on the role of white-ball interim head coach without a corresponding increase in compensation, further straining his relationship with the board. The position was eventually assigned to Aqib Javed, a selection panel member, until the Champions Trophy concluded.
Speculation is rife that Gillespie might resign before the South Africa series, although the terms of such a move remain critical. If dismissed, the PCB may have to pay a significant portion of his contract, which is set to run until mid-2026. However, if Gillespie opts to resign, the payout would be significantly reduced.
The PCB, while denying that Gillespie’s job is under immediate threat, has refrained from confirming his tenure beyond the South Africa series. Gillespie is scheduled to travel with the team to South Africa on December 13. The first Test of the series will be held in Centurion on December 26, followed by the second in Cape Town on January 3.
