Jayasuriya’s Five-Wicket Haul Seals Dominant Series Win for Sri Lanka Over Bangladesh

Sri Lanka completed a commanding innings-and-78-run victory over Bangladesh on the fourth morning of the second Test in Chattogram, clinching the two-match series 1-0 and earning crucial points in the ICC World Test Championship 2025-27 cycle.

The final day’s proceedings lasted just 28 minutes as Sri Lanka ruthlessly dismantled the remaining Bangladesh batting line-up, needing only 34 deliveries to wrap up the match. Left-arm spinner Prabath Jayasuriya led the charge with a brilliant five-wicket haul, finishing with figures of 5 for 56—his 12th five-for in Test cricket.

Jayasuriya struck early, removing Litton Das just three balls into the day’s play, caught behind by Kusal Mendis. He followed it up by stumping Nayeem Hasan and later took a sharp return catch to dismiss Taijul Islam, completing his five-for. Tharindu Ratnayake provided the finishing touch by trapping Ebadot Hossain LBW, bringing a swift end to Bangladesh’s second innings at 133 in 44.2 overs.

The second innings was a stark contrast to Jayasuriya’s wicketless outing in the first, as the Sri Lankan spin unit dominated with nine of the ten wickets falling to spin. Ratnayake and captain Dhananjaya de Silva contributed with two wickets each, supporting Jayasuriya’s demolition act.

Earlier in the match, Bangladesh had won the toss and chosen to bat first, mirroring their approach from the Galle Test. However, they faltered this time, managing 247 in their first innings. Sri Lanka responded emphatically, piling on 458 runs thanks to a career-best 158 from Pathum Nissanka, a gritty 93 from Dinesh Chandimal, and an attacking 84 from Kusal Mendis. Taijul Islam’s 5 for 131 was the only silver lining in an otherwise disappointing performance for Bangladesh.

The hosts failed to offer any serious resistance in their second innings, crumbling under sustained pressure from Sri Lanka’s spinners. Mushfiqur Rahim top-scored with just 26, as the rest of the batting line-up failed to stand up.

With this victory, Sri Lanka secured their ninth innings win over Bangladesh in Test history and reasserted their dominance with a 1-0 series win.
