Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has expressed full confidence in Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Chairman Mohsin Naqvi’s leadership and strategy for the upcoming ICC Champions Trophy 2025. During a meeting in Lahore, the Prime Minister lauded Naqvi’s efforts in securing Pakistan’s hosting rights and ensuring the country’s representation on the global cricketing stage.
Shehbaz Sharif commended Naqvi for his “principled stance” on the Champions Trophy, stating that it reflects the aspirations of 240 million Pakistanis. “Pakistan’s honor comes first, and everything else comes after,” he remarked. He further emphasized the significance of Naqvi’s representation at the International Cricket Council (ICC), calling it a source of pride for the nation.
In response, Mohsin Naqvi assured the Prime Minister of the PCB’s preparedness to host the tournament, highlighting Pakistan’s commitment to the success of cricket. “Our ultimate goal is the success of Pakistan and cricket,” Naqvi stated, expressing optimism about positive developments ahead of the event.
During the meeting, Naqvi briefed the Prime Minister on a recent breakthrough agreement with the ICC. Under this agreement, a hybrid model will be implemented for ICC tournaments hosted in Pakistan and India until 2027. This model ensures that Pakistan and India will play matches against each other at neutral venues, addressing the long-standing cross-border tensions.
The hybrid arrangement applies to three major ICC global events:
- Champions Trophy 2025 in Pakistan
- Women’s ODI World Cup 2025 in India
- Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 co-hosted by India and Sri Lanka
The agreement, reached during discussions between ICC chief Jay Shah and Mohsin Naqvi in Dubai, is being hailed as a diplomatic success. Sources revealed that the PCB proposed a ‘Partnership or Fusion Formula’ to resolve the impasse, allowing both countries to participate in tournaments without compromising on security or national interests.
Naqvi assured that the PCB is fully prepared to host the Champions Trophy in February 2025. He detailed the board’s logistical and operational plans, ensuring the tournament’s smooth execution. The Prime Minister reiterated his support for the PCB’s efforts, underlining the importance of hosting the event to showcase Pakistan’s capabilities to the world.
