Sarfaraz Ahmed hints at retirement ahead of ICC Champions Trophy

Pakistan’s veteran wicketkeeper-batter Sarfaraz Ahmed has hinted at retirement, signaling that his decorated playing career may soon come to an end. Speaking during a media interaction on Friday ahead of the Champions T20 Cup, Sarfaraz made a cryptic yet sarcastic remark, suggesting his time in cricket is nearing its conclusion.

When asked about his future in the national team, Sarfaraz stated, “As far as my career is concerned, I think I donโ€™t need to say anything. Nothing is left. I know what you are waiting for, and it will happen soon.”

Having made his international debut in 2007, Sarfaraz has had a remarkable career spanning over 16 years. He has represented Pakistan in 54 Tests, 117 ODIs, and 61 T20Is, amassing 6,164 runs, including six centuries and 32 half-centuries. His leadership skills shone when he captained Pakistan to their first ICC Champions Trophy victory in 2017 and achieved a record 11 consecutive T20I series wins during his tenure.

Despite his contributions, Sarfarazโ€™s recent appearances for the national team have been sparse. His last Test outing came in 2023, where he struggled with the bat, scoring just seven runs. His last white-ball appearance was in November 2021, marking a significant gap in his international career.

As his national team opportunities dwindle, Sarfaraz is set to mentor the Dolphins team in the upcoming Champions T20 Cup, continuing his association with the game in a non-playing capacity.
