Former Pakistan all-rounder Shahid Afridi has voiced his disapproval over the decision to remove fast bowler Shaheen Shah Afridi as Pakistan’s captain after just one series. Speaking in Karachi, Afridi termed the decision “unfair” and emphasized that leadership transitions require stability and support.
Afridi, however, admitted he was not initially in favor of appointing Shaheen as the national team’s captain. He highlighted Mohammad Rizwan as the ideal choice for the role after Babar Azam, acknowledging Rizwan’s importance in Pakistan’s white-ball setup.
Discussing emerging talent, Afridi expressed high hopes for opener Saim Ayub, calling him a potential top performer in all three formats. He also praised all-rounder Aamer Jamal, likening his capabilities to those of former star Abdul Razzaq, who served Pakistan with distinction for years.
Addressing the ongoing Champions Trophy controversy, Afridi lauded the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) for taking a firm stance. “When it comes to the country, tough decisions are necessary, and the PCB is on the right track regarding the Champions Trophy,” he said, urging the International Cricket Council (ICC) to intervene and help resolve the impasse.
Afridi concluded by noting that while Pakistan possesses immense talent, it often goes underutilized due to a lack of proper management and opportunities. His remarks reflect a broader concern for nurturing and sustaining the country’s cricketing potential.
