South Africa has announced a strong 15-member squad for the home ODI series against Pakistan, set to begin on December 17, with Temba Bavuma at the helm. The series is seen as a key step in preparing for the ICC Champions Trophy next year.
The squad features the return of pacer Kagiso Rabada to South Africa’s ODI lineup for the first time since the 2023 Cricket World Cup. Power-hitters David Miller and Heinrich Klaasen also make their first ODI appearances since December 2023, adding experience to the side.
Eighteen-year-old Kwena Maphaka has earned his maiden call-up to South Africa’s ODI squad. The promising youngster, who has already impressed in T20Is, was named Player of the Tournament at this year’s ICC Under-19 Menโs Cricket World Cup, where he claimed 21 wickets at an average of 9.71.
The pace attack is further bolstered by Ottneil Baartman, along with all-rounders Marco Jansen and Andile Phehlukwayo. However, Anrich Nortje misses out due to a toe injury.
Rob Walter, South Africa’s white-ball coach, expressed confidence in the squad, highlighting its balance and potential to deliver in high-pressure scenarios. “We have named our strongest squad available, with each player capable of being a match-winner on their day. This series will be crucial in fine-tuning our combinations ahead of the ICC Champions Trophy next year,” Walter said.
The series against Pakistan provides an opportunity for the Proteas to test their combinations and build momentum as they aim for a strong showing at the Champions Trophy. The first ODI will be held on December 17 at Paarl.
