T10 helps players perfect their skills”: David Wiese on Lanka T10 Super League kickoff

The Lanka T10 Super League 2024 began with a bang at the Pallekele International Cricket Stadium, delivering thrilling matches on its opening day. Jaffna Titans skipper and seasoned all-rounder David Wiese praised the T10 format for its ability to sharpen players’ skills and its potential to expand cricket’s global reach.

“In T10, especially as a bowler, you have a very small margin of error. You need to perfect your skills because you can’t afford to be off by much,” Wiese explained. He emphasized that the format challenges players to refine their abilities under intense pressure, making it an excellent platform for growth.

Wiese also highlighted the T10 format’s role in popularizing cricket in emerging markets. “I believe T10 has a place, especially for tapping into new markets. It’s a great way to grow the game,” he noted. However, he acknowledged the potential for one-sided games in the shorter format, where a single player’s dominance can determine the outcome.

While advocating for the format, Wiese reaffirmed the importance of traditional formats like T20s, ODIs, and Tests. “The longer formats are purer, and I hope players continue focusing on them. That said, T10 is definitely gaining traction,” he added.

Reflecting on the tournament’s start and his experience in Sri Lanka, Wiese expressed excitement about the event’s positive reception. “It’s fantastic to be here in Sri Lanka. The tournament has started well, with fans showing great support on the first day. The passion for cricket here is incredible,” he said.

Wiese also lauded young Sri Lankan spinner Treveen Mathew, who delivered a game-changing performance in the opening match with a four-wicket haul against the Hambantota Bangla Tigers. “Treveen is an emerging talent, and as a young spinner, this opportunity is significant for him. His four wickets turned the game for us, and Iโ€™m really happy for him,” Wiese remarked.
