Who is Tanush Kotian? Meet India’s new call-up for the Australia Tests

  • by

India has made a significant addition to their squad for the final two matches of the Border-Gavaskar Series against Australia, bringing in uncapped all-rounder Tanush Kotian. The 26-year-old replaces legendary off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin, who retired from international cricket following the Brisbane Test. Hereโ€™s everything you need to know about the rising star who has earned his maiden Test call-up.

Tanush Kotian, a right-arm off-spinner and capable batsman, has steadily climbed the ranks in Indian cricket. A product of Mumbai’s age-group cricket system, he was part of India’s Under-19 squad in 2017, playing alongside now-prominent players like Riyan Parag and Arshdeep Singh. While he missed out on the ICC Under-19 World Cup 2018 squad, Kotianโ€™s performances in domestic age-group tournaments, especially the Vinoo Mankad Trophy, soon earned him a spot in Mumbai’s senior team.

Kotian made his first-class debut for Mumbai in 2018 at the age of 20, taking two wickets in the first innings against Saurashtra. Over the years, he has become a cornerstone of Mumbai’s Ranji Trophy team, amassing 101 wickets at an average of 25.70 in 33 first-class matches. His batting has been equally impressive, scoring 1,525 runs at an average of 41.21, including two centuries and 13 half-centuries.

One of Kotian’s standout domestic performances came during Mumbai’s triumphant Ranji Trophy campaign, where he was named Player of the Tournament. He claimed 29 wickets and scored 502 runs, including a century and five fifties, at an average of 41.83 in 14 innings.

In the ongoing red-ball season, Kotian has already taken 12 wickets in five matches, showcasing his consistent form. His all-round abilities caught the attention of IPL franchises, leading to his signing with the Rajasthan Royals for the 2024 season as a replacement for Adam Zampa. Though he made his IPL debut, he did not get a chance to bowl during his stint.

Kotianโ€™s journey to the national squad gained momentum with a century in the Irani Cup against the Rest of India in October, a performance that propelled him to the India A team. During India A’s tour of Australia, Kotian showed resilience, scoring 44 runs and taking a wicket in the second innings of a tour match in Melbourne.

With the Test series moving to Melbourne and Sydneyโ€”venues traditionally favoring spinnersโ€”Kotianโ€™s inclusion adds depth to Indiaโ€™s spin options. He joins an experienced spin lineup featuring Ravindra Jadeja and Washington Sundar, providing the team with a versatile all-rounder who can contribute with both bat and ball.

Rohit Sharma Backs Tanush Kotianโ€™s Inclusion after Ashwin retirement

Indian skipper Rohit Sharma has expressed confidence in Tanush Kotianโ€™s inclusion for the final two Tests of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, emphasizing the all-rounderโ€™s impressive domestic performances over the past two years. Kotian, who replaces Ravichandran Ashwin following his retirement, has been pivotal in Mumbaiโ€™s Ranji Trophy success, earning accolades as Player of the Tournament with 29 wickets and 502 runs. Rohit highlighted Kotianโ€™s ability to deliver with both bat and ball, calling him a strong backup option, especially if the team decides to field two spinners in the upcoming matches in Melbourne or Sydney.

Rohit also pointed out Kotianโ€™s recent experience with India A in Australia, which makes him well-suited for the conditions. The skipper explained that injuries to Kuldeep Yadav, who recently underwent hernia surgery, and Axar Patelโ€™s unavailability due to personal commitments made Kotian the logical choice. Describing Kotian as a capable and prepared player, Rohit praised his contribution to domestic cricket, particularly his ability to perform under pressure and his significant role in Mumbaiโ€™s success.
